  • Book Printing FAQ

Why can't I use my BookBaby.com account login info for BookBabyPrint.com?

BookBaby.com and Print.BookBaby.com operations are managed using two different production systems. While we understand it is not ideal to maintain two different account logins it is necessary, at this point, in order for BookBaby to support the ala cart menu of author support services we provide today. Someday we will merge the two systems, but until then, you will need to maintain both your BookBaby and BookBabyPrint account logins.

Ordering both eBook & physical book printing.

BookBaby's author support services are offered ala cart, and are priced accordingly. If you would like to purchase eBook services you should visit BookBaby.com to sign up. If would like to order physical book printing services you should visit BookBabyPrint.com.

What if I already have an eBook cover design but want to have a spine and back cover designed for my printed books?

BookBaby design will be happy to incorporate your existing eBook cover design into your physical book cover design. You should select the basic cover design option when ordering your physical books. After you save your quote you will be asked to upload any design assets you would like to have incorporated into your design. You should upload an image of your existing eBook cover here and describe how you would like us to incorporate it into the new design.

    What is an ISBN?

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies books and book-like products published internationally.

What is the purpose of an ISBN?

The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify one title or one unique edition of a title from one specific publisher. An ISBN allows for more efficient marketing and cataloging of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers, and distributors.

Do I really need an ISBN?

If you are selling your book on your own, you are not required to have an ISBN. However, if you want to sell your book online or in bookstores, place it with distributors and wholesalers, or put it in libraries, then you'll need to have an ISBN.

Is an ISBN the same thing as a bar code?

This is a popular misconception. The bar code you see on the back of a book is derived from an ISBN, but the two are not the same. An ISBN is only a number. A bar code is a visual method used to convey an ISBN to a computer using scanning technology during a sales or inventory transaction process. An ISBN and a bar code are two different things.

How can I add an ISBN bar code to my artwork?

First, purchase an ISBN bar code in the project quoter. If you're doing design off-line, plan ahead for where your bar code will go. It doesn't need a white box, just an area with no critical text or images. Size of bar code is .5" tall by 1.25" wide. (Note: we can only print horizontal bar codes at this time.) After the screen where you upload your artwork (or create it if you are using our designer), you will be taken to a screen that allows you to choose the location for your ISBN bar code in your artwork.

I have my own ISBN number. Can you make the bar code itself?

No, you must create your bar code and embed it in your design files. If you have your ISBN number and need the scannable code itself to plug into your design, search online for a free ISBN code generator. There are a lot of them out there that will create a bar code in a number of different formats.

Do I own the ISBN you assign?

Yes, you do. However, once a publisher is assigned to an ISBN it can't be reassigned. If you use an ISBN purchased from BookBaby you will be listed as the publisher at some retail sites, and some will list BookBaby whether or not BookBaby delivered your book to that store. If you want to ensure that you are listed as the publisher at all of our retail partner's sites we recommend that you acquire your own ISBNs. For more information please go to www.bowker.com .

What if I can't supply my own cover design or formatted text?

We have a wonderful Design Studio that can create a custom cover design for you and we also offer text formatting services. Both of these options are available for selection after you save your project information and login to your account.

    How are my books printed?

Quantities under 500 units are printed via state of the art digital printers and then bound using traditional book binding methods. Quantities above 500 units are printed traditional offset and are also bound using traditional book binding methods.

    What are headbands?

Cotton ornamental black and white stripped headbands glued to the head and tail of the text block spine of the book. Headbands are available only in black/white stripes. Headbands are only available on hard cover books.

    What is a dust jacket?

A detachable outer cover printed on 80lb Enamel Cover Stock with folded flaps that hold it to the front and back book cover. Often the back panel or flaps are printed with biographical information about the author, a summary of the book from the publisher (blurb) and quotes of critical praise from reviewers. In addition to its promotional role, the dust jacket is thought to protect the book covers from damage.

How come I can order 1 book or 50+ book, but I can't order 25 books?

In order to provide the breadth of trim sizes, and binding styles, that authors require at affordable prices we need to maintain a 50 unit minimum order quantity. In response to demand for a “hard copy” proof option we do offer authors the opportunity to order 1 book to review before placing larger quantity orders.

Will I see proofs of my book before printing?

Yes! Once you save your book quote and upload your files you will be presented with a live digital proof of your cover file, and text file, to approve before your order is finalized. If you purchase cover or text formatting design services from BookBabyPrint you will receive an email containing a link to view and approve your design proofs online.

How long does it take to print my books?

Production turn time is 5 business days on all orders except hard cover book orders greater than 500 units which require 10 business days to produce. Day 1 starts on all orders with proofs approved by Noon Eastern Time.

What kind of paper stock is used for my cover?

Soft Covers are printed on 10Pt C1S.
Hard Covers & Dust Jackets are printed on 80lb Enamel.

What kind of text paper stock choices do you offer?
    • 50lb Natural: 500 PPI, 92 Opacity, SFI Certified
    • 60lb Natural: 420 PPI, 94 Opacity, SFI Certified
    • 60lb Opaque: 500 PPI, 93 Opacity, SFI Certified
    • 60lb Gloss: 667 PPI, 91 Opacity, SFI Certified
    • 80lb Gloss: 512 PPI, 95 Opacity, SFI Certified
    Will you ship to Australia?

Yes, we ship to many International locations. Check the drop-down "Ship-to Country" in the right column of the quoter. If your country is listed, you can place your order on the site.

Why is there such a wide date range for shipping via DHL?

DHL always gives a 2-6 day window on shipping, but in our experience most deliveries are within 2-3 days.

I want to send some of my books to a distributor and some to my house. Will you do that for me?

At this time, we don't offer split shipments. But with the short-run service, you can easily place one order for one location, and then reorder whatever quantity you want shipped to another location.

What are BookBabyPrint's hours of operation?

Customer support is open from 9am -5pm Eastern Time.

What If I approved my proof but want to make a change to my order?

We are sorry, but order changes can't be made to orders after the proof is approved.

How do I pay for my project?

We accept Visa/MC, Amex, Discover and PayPal.

  • Book Design FAQ

What is the difference between Basic and Deluxe Cover Design?

Basic Design focuses on one main image and a simple text layout. Deluxe Design may include multiple images, more elaborate design elements and stylized type. In a Deluxe Design, we can often combine several images to achieve specific details that are not present in a single photo.

Visit our design galleries for Basic and Deluxe Cover samples.

Does BookBaby Design Studio offer custom illustration?

We do not currently offer illustration from scratch, but we can use stock art or your supplied images to help create a cover that has a painterly or illustrated style.

Can BookBaby Design Studio create specific characters or places for my cover design?

Maybe! In order to include specific characteristics of a person or place, we often need to combine images. Therefore most detailed requests require Deluxe Cover Design. Also, because we use stock images and not illustration to create a character or scene, we are limited by the details available in our large stock photo collection. Feel free to ask and we'll do our best to include as many of your elements as we can. We may not have a photo of the exact activity, pose, clothing or hair style but we can certainly offer alternate solutions that will convey a similar mood or style.

If BookBaby is formatting or designing my book, how do I know how many pages my book will be? What happens if I have significantly more / fewer pages than selected?

The page count of your printed book will not be exactly the same length as your manuscript. You should give your best estimate to final page count and we will do our best to make it work. Approximate page count is best determined by setting up your MS Word document's page size to match the page size of your finished book, with at least 7/8ths (0.875) left and right margins. Use a standard Times New Roman, set at 11 point.

Estimated number of words per page?

A 5.25 x 8" book has approximately 350 words per page. Formatting, images and design elements will change the word count.

Can I choose the fonts and point size for my body copy?

All body copy will be in our standard serif font. The serif font has been chosen for its clarity, readability and friendly professional style. The point size for chapter titles, headings and picture captions will be chosen by the designer based on your specific book.

Can I choose the fonts for the chapter headers?

Authors can specify a font or preference for either a serif or san-serif font for the chapter titles when purchasing Color Text Design & Formatting. Our standard serif font is used for all books with black text.

Is a table of contents included with Black Text Design?

If you want a Table of Contents, you will need to supply the list of chapters in your manuscript. The designer will add the corresponding page numbers.

    What are Inline Images?

Inline Images are images embedded in the text. The image will flow as if it were part of the text. Images supplied for Black Text Design & Formatting books should be supplied Inline.

What is included in book interior Text Design & Formatting?

Black Text Design & Formatting includes designer layout of the following items in your book interior. Page Numbers: Page number style is chosen by the designer. Page numbers do not appear on blank pages or front matter. Title Page: Includes the title, author and illustrator if applicable. Can include copyright and publisher information, if you include that page in your manuscript. Chapters Titles / Sections: Headings can vary from simple numbers to phrases. Running Headers: Small text that runs at top of left and right pages. BookBaby designer will add running headers where appropriate. Any other special sections (such as table of contents or image captions) will be included only if they are part of your supplied manuscript.

Color Text Design & Formatting includes designer layout of the following items in your book interior. Page Numbers: Page number style is chosen by the designer and based on book style. Page numbers do not appear on blank pages or front matter. Title Page: Includes the title, author and illustrator if applicable. Can include copyright and publisher information if you provide this information. Chapters Titles / Sections: Headings can vary from simple numbers to phrases and design is based on the book style and layout. Running Headers: Small text that runs at top of left and right pages. BookBaby designer will add running headers where appropriate. Table of Contents Colophon: Describes design and printing details including typeface and paper stock. Plus any of these special sections you request and supply text for: Foreword, Dedication, Acknowledgment Page, Image Captions, Appendix.

How should I supply image caption text?

Black Text Design & Formatting: caption text should be supplied as part of your Word file. Caption text should directly follow the corresponding inline image. Color Text Design & Formatting: do not set image captions as part of your manuscript. Simply provide a separate list of all your caption text, numbering the caption and the corresponding photo with the same number.

How do I supply the best quality images?

Be sure your supplied images are high resolution: 300 PPI for grayscale or CMYK images; 1200 PPI or more for line art (also known as 1-bit). Anything less will produce poor, fuzzy or pixilated results. Graphics and photos taken from the Internet (PNGs, GIFs or JPEGs) are discouraged due to their low resolution and possible copyright issues. Scaling down an image improves print quality but scaling up an image will only reduce the print quality and therefore is not a solution to low resolution images. It is best to supply images in CMYK color mode. RGB images will be converted to CMYK, but be aware that color shifts may occur.

What if I don't have any images?

If you don't have any images, let us know what you are looking for and we can come up with something appropriate using photos from our stock collection. We have thousands of images in our stock photo library and a wide variety from general landscapes of mountains, clouds, sunsets, city skylines etc, to still life objects, old maps to more specific things such as flowers, trees, animals, people at work and play, silhouetted figures and many, many more.

How many images are included in the design of my book?

Black Text Design & Formatting: do not include photos, however, we do allow up to 20 supplied B&W inline images. Color Text Design & Formatting: includes between 50 and 100 supplied images or between 10 and 25 BookBaby stock images depending on your page count. If your book requires additional images, we will review your information and provide you with a custom design quote.

What kind of proofs will I receive?

Once your design is complete you will receive an email notification containing a link to review and approve your PDF proofs online. Please note that computer monitors and home printers vary greatly, so PDF proofs are used to check text, layout and overall appearance of your project. Variation on your final product is to be expected due to the normal variables in commercial printing.

    What is a Style Proof?

All Color Text Design orders will receive a preview proof of a section of your book so you can approve the design style before our designers design the whole book interior. After your approval of the preview, we'll complete your book design and send you a PDF of the complete layout.

    What are Author Alterations?

Author's Alterations or AAs are text or design changes that the author makes to their original supplied materials or to their original requests.
    Pricing for Text Edits:
$20 for every 10 changes. Text Edits include single changes made to one place in the book (for example a typo, or punctuation change) and global changes when the same error appears several times in the book (for example the spelling of someone's name). Each single change or global change counts as 1 Text Edit.

    1-10 Text Edits = $20. 11-20 Text Edits = $40.

    New Text:
$30 each. New text includes replacing or adding a full paragraph, or replacing or adding 1 full page of text. The cost includes changes required to Table of Contents caused by New Text.
